Jonathan Howard

Hatmaker was launched by two milliner friends, Jonathan Howard and Jenifer Nairn. 

In spring 2006, we opened our first store in Double Bay, Sydney, specialising in custom-made hats. We soon found our niche in fashion millinery and became a favourite in the bridal headpiece market too.

But our happy place was always straw sun hats—hand-dyed, softly blocked, and easy to wear.

This became our signature.

Sadly, Jenifer passed away in March 2023.

Today, Jonathan works from the beautiful Nambucca Valley, inspired by the nature that surrounds the studio. The hats are made slowly and with care—each one valued for its uniqueness and quality.

A Hatmaker hat is not mass-produced, but sculpted by hand and thoughtfully finished. Each one tells the story of its maker and is shaped by the person who wears it.

I make hats, but ultimately, I see myself in service—to provide an experienced hand to guide the commission of a new hat.
